Room C is an Imagination Choreography for 8 visitors featuring 8 diverse audio tracks.
Heremans began this work as an artistic reflection on a severe accident he experienced, of which he has no memory. By gathering the statements of witnesses, he could imagine what had precisely happened. This experience revealed that our brains can be a nest where reality, fantasy, observations, memories, information, truth, and lies coexist and sometimes intermingle.
In the work, eight visitors are invited to enter a room and stand on one of the white crosses on the floor. Through headphones, they receive instructions to close their eyes and imagine specific situations, ranging from abstract to very personal. Participants might be asked to envision themselves in another place, in another room, with different people. Occasionally, one participant can open their eyes and change places, allowing them to stand face to face with others.
The combination of imagination and spatial composition, created by the visitors moving around, fosters a game of human introspection, reflection, and projection. In this work, personal reconstruction and perception of time are central. Each listener receives different instructions, allowing for alternative compositions and experiences to emerge. For those not participating, the work transforms into a moving installation composed of the other visitors in the room. Watching and being watched, intruding into someone else's mind: in Room #, every visitor engages in the game of imagination in their own way and from their own experience.
The experience includes approximately 17 minutes of spoken recorded words in English, delivered through tape, MP3 players, and headphones.
The voice is provided by Emily Whitebread, with photos by Joeri Thiry and Pierre Antoine.
